Letter to Editor of Arbroath Herald re. Loraine Cant Concert

Dear Editor,

May I, through your column, take this opportunity to thank all the people and organisations that were involved in the successful concert on Sunday the 23rd April.

The concert was a fund raising venture in memory of our dear friend and colleague Loraine Cant. Although it was put together under the auspices of Arbroath Musical Society a number of other organisations were involved. We would like to thank them all for their co-operation and patience during the rehearsal period and the very busy Sunday. The show would also not have been possible had it not been for the loan of equipment and costumes from a number of sources, free of charge.

Most of all I would like to thank the two people who worked to bring this concert to the stage. They are James Hutcheson and Richard Allan. They were the team who devised the programme, produced and organised the final polished product.

As I have already stated the proceeds from this concert will be destined for a cancer charity. At present the final amount is not known but we hope it will be a substantial sum of money.

Thanks must also go to the excellent audience who supported us.

Yours sincerely

Susan B Robertson

Review of Chess (14th - 18th Feb 2006)

What is absolutely great is the music, matched by the clever casting of this production.
Producer, James Hutchison, and musical director, Richard Allan, supported by a tremendous line-up of singers and musicians, have done their very best to get the most out of this difficult show.

Special mention must be made of three particular scenes. The first is the Deal, which owes much of its success to carefully rehearsed movement and expert choreography. Another is the Embassy Lament, with the four civil servants doing in perfect unison whatever it is that civil servants do, and the third is a beautiful cameo scene towards the end of the play when Anatoly and Svetlana's son sits quietly amid the confusion, concentrating totally on the pieces on a tiny chess board.

Review of Les Miserables (School Edition) (27th Sept- 01st Oct 05).

THIS MUSICAL by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, adapted for Schools by Joseph Weinberger on behalf of Cameron Mackintosh and presented by the Arbroath Musical society in the Webster Theatre this week made an emotional and memorable impact on their large audiences, including myself. Producer Danny Webster caught the emotion, comedy, love and hate in a moving production where it was difficult to remember you were watching young actors - no one over the age of 19 can take part in this edition.
The company was well rehearsed and everyone was confident and gave an excellent performance. Richard Allan as musical director had obviously risen to the challenge of this score and worked meticulously with company and musicians, the cast members each sounding clear and sure, with once again an excellent orchestra, to which we have become accustomed, under his baton.
From time to time along comes a musical that makes history and this has, in many ways.

Review of Titanic The Musical by Noda Scotland

Region No. 10 - Ron Stewart reports:

ARBROATH M.S.    TITANIC (THE MUSICAL) FEB. 14 – 19, ’05

SCOTTISH PREMIERE

This powerful performance found Arbroath Musical Society at one of the    pinnacles of its long career. The show had everything – a splendid cast; an outstanding orchestra; a production to compare with any professional offering; impressive sets and costumes; very effective sound effects, and, to top it all, a chorus sound to die for!
